red and blue

As I was planning my first cosplays I discovered that many of the heroes wear red and blue. I asked myself why that is. I could just think of Superman who brought them in style. And maybe he was the inspiration for the heroes to come. I feel like if I see these colours together I am automatically reminded of some superhero like Spiderman, Superman or Captain America. Not only superheroes but also in mangas, main characters like SailorMoon or Monkey'd'Luffy wear red and blue.

But why are the colours red and blue? Red and blue are very strong colours. Red is associated with action, passion and courage and blue is associated with strength, trust and peace. These are as well the emotions a hero should send out.

There are other super heroes who don’t wear these colours. Batman for example is all in black but he also grieves and is typically associated with the night. IronMan has the colours red and gold but he’s not the one who wants to be trusted.

Another point is Superman and Captain American are American superheroes, they are patriotes. With Captain America it is clear he wears these colours because of the colours of the flag of America.

The question is are these colours chosen because of the reasons above or are they taken because they are fundamental colours?

I will definitely stay conscious of who wears what colour.
