The fashion of Doctor Who

Doctor Who is a family show the target audience therefore is from every age and gender. Especially with the new series they had to attract a new audience not just the old hardcore fans of the original series. They had great expectations to fill. A doctor always must look timeless and cool.

It seems like they wanted to be safe with the ninth doctor, it is always difficult to bring a character back. With all the hype surrounding the Doctor Who original series, they had to fill big footsteps. The Doctor as he comes back as a broken man after the time war. He now is the only one of his kind and he is the one who did this to his people. He always wears dark colours as if he was grieving, which he actually is to an extent. Also he came back with a dark side, all the things he had to do toughened him up. This is very much captured in the fact that he wears a leather jacket and army boots. There is something about a leather jacket that makes anyone who wears it look tough.

The grief went away to some extent with the tenth Doctor; he learned much when he met Rose and with his reincarnation he now showed it. He got back to the quirkiness of the doctors before. He still is a serious man, which is why he wears a suit. But the thing that gives him away are his converse. They express how easy-going he is and go very well with his witty nature. It is hard to imagine an uptight man, wearing this combination.
The eleventh doctor now is full grown quirky he acts like a little child and what he wears looks somehow like a costume but a very cool looking costume.

In the new generation of doctors the companions were mostly British women like Amy, Clara and Rose. Plus they all were from our time or rather the time the episodes aired. This explains why they always seem to be fashionable. They are all strong, outgoing, adventurous woman who dress rather comfortable and dress for the weather in Britain. What shows in the fact they always seem to wear cloth which can be worn by rain and wind.

They are role models for many young women mostly in Great Britain. This is the reason many people weren’t exited when Amy wore these short skirts, but it made perfectly sense for her character. As a companion Amy grew up and as time went on she dressed more conservative than in the beginning.
All in all you can see how much thoughts goes into the costumes of the characters and how much you can tell about their character just from the outfit.

Till next time! Bye!
